Music obsession is set to replace economic depression at this year’s Westport Music Festival. The doom and gloom forecast in the tourism and accommodation sectors will surly be boosted by the influx of thousands of music fans from right around the country for the week-long festival this year.

A capital grant of €500,000 has been confirmed for the creation and development of new enterprise in Westport.

Preparations are well under way for the Westport Festival of Sport fun day, which is to be held in conjunction with the Gaelforce adventure race weekend Sunday August 23 on the South Mall, Westport. The event, co-ordinated by the Mayo Sports Partnership, promises to be full of fun activities such as the family sports challenge (incorporating 12 different sports), water sports, demonstrations, bouncy castle/fun inflatables, walking challenges, street orienteering, inclusive games, and the fourth annual Mayo Team Challenge.

Following a proactive Westport Town Council campaign, it has been confirmed that a train service from Westport which will arrive in Dublin’s Heuston Station before 9am will commence, along with extra services on the Mayo line, in September.

Details have just been announced of the 2009 Mayo News/Mayo Sports Partnership Team Challenge taking place as part of the Westport Festival of Sport Fun Day on Sunday August 23 at the Mall area in Westport. During 2009 the occupancy in hotels in Westport town remained the same as the previous year — a statistic which was praised by Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Councillor Myles Staunton, during a presentation given to town councillors by Westport Chamber of Commerce, where the chamber outlined their preference for a reduction in town rates.
